Proverbs with Purpose for Young People- Proverb 23

Here's a practical example to understand-

Proverbs 23:13, 17, 18

Do not withhold discipline from the child;

If you swat him with a reed-like rod [applied with godly wisdom], he will not die.

Do not let your heart envy sinners [who live godless lives and have no hope of salvation],

But [continue to] live in the [reverent, worshipful] fear of the Lord day by day.

Surely there is a future [and a reward],

And your hope and expectation will not be cut off.

The Party Dilemma

Setting: 15-year-old James is invited to a wild party by some friends who regularly engage in risky behavior and disrespectful actions. He really wants to go, drawn in by the promise of excitement and social acceptance.

Parental Role:

  • Discipline: James' parents set clear boundaries and consequences. They remind him that his responsibility to fulfill his commitments to schoolwork and household chores come first.

  • Communication: They have a serious conversation with James about his recent behavior after the previous party. They express concern about the negative influence of his friends and how it affects his own values and future goals.

  • Support: Despite the consequences, the parents offer James their support and understanding. They want him to know that they are not punishing him, but guiding him towards making better choices.

Applying Proverbs:

  • Proverbs 23:13: The parents apply discipline by setting limits and consequences, while using love and wisdom to guide James towards better decisions.

  • Proverbs 17:3: The parents communicate with respect and humility, showing James that they value his input and want to understand his perspective.

  • Proverbs 18:18: The parents ensure James that there is still a future ahead of him, filled with opportunities for growth and achievement.

Outcome:

  • James learns the importance of taking responsibility for his own actions.

  • He develops a stronger sense of accountability for his commitments.

  • He understands the negative consequences of surrounding himself with negative influences, so he is not envious of others who are on the wrong path; even though it might appear they’re having fun.

  • He appreciates the love and guidance of his parents, despite the temporary restriction.

Lesson:

This example shows how discipline, open communication, and support can help you navigate difficult situations and make responsible choices for your own future. Just as James learned to prioritize his responsibilities over the allure of a party, you can learn to make tough choices that will lead towards a fulfilling and successful life.
